Vasco SC rally to hold 10-man Salgaocar FC 1-1 in Goa Pro League

Raia : Vasco SC rallied strongly and put up a good second half showing to snatch a point off Salgaocar FC in a Round 13 clash of the Goa Professional League played at the Raia Panchayat Sports Complex earlier today. With this result the Greens continue on third position in the points table having accumulated 19 points whilst Vasco SC have 15 points to their credit, both sides having played 12 games each.

It was a game of two halves with the Greens the dominant force in the first period. Salgaocar had a decent chance as early as the third minute after Brian Mascarenhas had made a strong run down the left and sent in a good cross, the ball just eluding Australian Calvin Mbarga who seemed to have misjudged the flight of the ball. In the very next minute skipper Rocus Lamare whipped in a free-kick from about 25 yards out. Pawan Kumar rose highest in the 6-yard box and connected well but Jerson Pereira in the Vasco goal who an outstanding game pulled off a point-blank reflex save to keep the scores tied. A rare attack which saw Chinedu shoot wide on the turn from inside the box was all Vasco had to show for in the early exchanges.

Salgaocar then had the best chance to surge ahead as Brian Mascarenhas found Myron Borges with a sublime through ball, the latter taking his eyes off the ball and eventually over-running it with just the keeper at his mercy. At the other end, Bruno Colaco was quickly off his line to deny Chinedu after the latter had been played through by Jerose Oliveira.

Just after the half hour mark, Salgaocar did manage to find the breakthrough. An inch perfect ball by Rocus from deep saw Martin Scott unselfishly cushion his header for Calvin to score on the volley. At that stage the Greens looked in total control and cruising. With 10 minutes to go to Half time Martin saw his free-kick acrobatically saved by Vasco custodian, Jerson.

Vasco came out the brighter of the two sides in the second half and Chinedu was a constant threat with his pace, playing on the shoulder of the last man. Calvin did manage to break into the Vasco on a couple of occasions in quick succession but failed to hit the target both times. Vasco then managed to find the equalizer as Sujil N S’s fine ball over the top saw Chinedu outmuscle his man and calmly round the keeper to slot into an empty net. The game opened up thereafter and was fairly stretched with both sides going all out for the elusive winner. With 10 minutes of regulation time remaining, Salgaocar were reduced to 10 men as Martin Scott was sent off for his second booking of the evening.

Despite being down a man, the Greens pressed and were almost rewarded deep into stoppage time as a long free-kick from Rocus from about 40 yards out saw Calvin’s header from the top of the box look like it was headed in but Jerson pulled off another terrific save to ensure the honors on the day were shared.
